Lab-Grown Diamonds in Chennai: Seven Buying Mistakes to Avoid

A practical buying checklist covering diamond reports, growth methods, full jewellery pricing and the terms to confirm before ordering.

Written by Glora Diamonds

Before buying lab-grown diamond jewellery, compare the actual stone, its documentation and the complete quotation. These seven checks help you understand what you are choosing, whether you buy in Chennai or online.

1. Check the report that applies to your piece

Ask which independent report covers the diamond or finished jewellery, what it assesses and how to verify its number. A mounted-jewellery report and a loose-diamond report may have different scope.

Read our guide to IGI, GIA and SGL documentation before comparing report terminology.

2. Understand labels such as Type IIa

A diamond classification is different from a complete quality assessment. Ask what a label tells you about the particular stone, and do not treat it as a guarantee of flawless appearance or better value.

3. Separate growth method from quality

Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) are diamond growth methods. Neither alone establishes the quality of a finished stone. Check its appearance and report, including any disclosed post-growth treatment.

Our CVD and HPHT guide explains why growth and treatment are separate questions.

4. Budget for the complete piece

  • Check centre-stone and total diamond weights separately.
  • Confirm metal purity, weight and the rate used.
  • Ask how making charges and any other charges are calculated.
  • Request the final amount, including applicable taxes and delivery charges.

A diamond-only price is different from a finished-ring price. Compare similar specifications using a dated, itemised quotation. Start with a design from our engagement ring collection and ask for its full specification and quotation.

5. Read the buyback and exchange calculation

Resale, retailer cash buyback and exchange credit are different arrangements. Ask whether your piece is eligible, which value forms the calculation and what deductions apply. A policy does not guarantee recovery of your original purchase price.

Our resale and buyback guide lists useful valuation questions. Confirm the current terms directly before purchasing.

6. Compare delivery and access to aftercare

When comparing an overseas order with a local purchase, include the complete delivered price and any applicable charges. Check inspection options, where resizing or repairs take place and who pays related charges.

7. Check written terms before paying

Read the returns, resizing, warranty and aftercare terms for your design, including exclusions for custom work. Verify the gold hallmark and the documentation that applies to the diamonds.

Bring these details to your consultation

Keep the quotation, report details, design reference and intended ring size together. The Glora team can discuss the piece, design options and questions about its written terms at the Chennai showroom or Bangalore showroom.
