A Simple Guide to Choosing an Engagement Ring

Start with your partner’s style, set a comfortable budget and compare a few designs. You don’t need to become a diamond expert to make a thoughtful choice.

1. Set Your Complete Budget

Choose an amount you feel comfortable spending. There is no salary rule you need to follow.

Ask for a quotation that includes the diamonds, gold, making charges and taxes. Compare complete ring prices rather than a diamond-only price with a finished piece.

2. Choose a Style Your Partner Enjoys

Look at the jewellery they already wear, then explore these options:

3. Understand the Four Diamond Basics

The 4Cs describe different characteristics:

• Cut: How the diamond is fashioned and handles light.

• Colour: Its assessed colour characteristics.

• Clarity: Internal inclusions and surface blemishes.

• Carat: Weight—not visible size.

A higher clarity grade does not automatically mean more sparkle. Compare the actual stone, its dimensions and the information in its report.

If choosing a lab-grown diamond, ask for a report confirming laboratory-grown origin and check what it covers.

4. Check the Metal and Fit

Choose a metal colour your partner likes—perhaps yellow, white or rose gold—and confirm the available purity options for the design.

Measure the intended finger. An existing ring is useful only if it fits that same finger on the same hand.

Ask about resizing before ordering, especially for decorative bands or custom pieces. If a wedding band will be added later, consider how the rings will fit together.

5. Confirm the Details Before Paying

Check:

• The selected diamond and applicable independent report.

• Gold purity and hallmark details.

• Final price and delivery date.

• Written return, resizing and aftercare terms.
