VS1 vs VVS1 Diamonds: An Engagement Ring Clarity Guide
VVS1 is a higher clarity grade, but it does not automatically make a ring look better. Compare the actual stone, report and price before deciding.
On this page
VVS1 is a higher clarity grade than VS1, but it does not automatically mean a visibly better engagement ring. Both can offer a beautiful appearance. The right choice depends on the individual diamond, its price and which qualities matter most to you.
For buyers exploring rings with Glora Diamonds in Chennai and Bangalore, this guide explains what the grades mean and how to compare them.
What Does Diamond Clarity Measure?
Clarity assesses internal characteristics called inclusions and surface characteristics called blemishes. Grading considers their size, number, location, nature and visibility under 10× magnification.
The relevant sequence, from higher to lower clarity, is:
VVS1 → VVS2 → VS1 → VS2
VS1 is therefore two grading steps below VVS1, with VVS2 between them. GIA explains the diamond clarity scale.

Can You See the Difference?
You may not notice a difference when comparing two well-selected stones without magnification. However, “eye-clean” is a viewing description, not a separate laboratory clarity grade.
Ask to examine the actual diamond rather than relying on a stock photograph. Look at it face-up at a normal viewing distance, then ask the jeweller to show the relevant characteristics under magnification.
If you are buying remotely, request a clear video of the specific stone and its report.
Does VVS1 Sparkle More Than VS1?
Not necessarily. Clarity and cut describe different qualities.
Cut influences how a diamond handles light. Paying for a higher clarity grade does not guarantee stronger sparkle if the stone’s proportions or craftsmanship are less effective.
Compare appearance alongside clarity, colour, dimensions and cut information. GIA explains diamond cut quality.
Is VVS1 Worth the Extra Cost?
It can be if the higher grade matters to you and the price difference fits your budget.
If both stones look equally attractive to you, compare what the additional spending achieves. You might prefer the VS1 stone, a different setting or another diamond with proportions you like more.
For a meaningful quotation, compare:
-
The same diamond origin: lab-grown with lab-grown, or natural with natural.
-
Similar shape, carat weight, dimensions and colour.
-
Comparable cut information and report scope.
-
The same metal and setting when comparing complete rings.
A clarity grade alone does not establish investment or future resale value.
What About Lab-Grown VS1 and VVS1 Diamonds?
Lab-grown diamonds can receive VS1 and VVS1 grades from laboratories using those clarity scales. IGI assesses clarity at 10× magnification and documents relevant characteristics in its reports. Read IGI’s laboratory-grown diamond report guidance.
Check the specific report. A product labelled simply “VS” or “VVS” does not, by itself, establish an individual VS1 or VVS1 grade.

Check the report identity Open to explore
Read the issuing laboratory and report number. Use that laboratory’s own verification service where available and compare the result with the report supplied.
Match the diamond details Open to explore
Compare the shape, measurements, carat weight and stated grades. Ask whether the document covers a centre stone, multiple stones or the finished jewellery.
Keep gold details separate Open to explore
A diamond report and a gold hallmark describe different parts of a piece. Ask for the gold purity and hallmark details separately.
